Doodles

Super Saiyan

Saiyan as in the Japanese fighter from Dragonball-Z, not to be confused with the hindi word saiyaan meaning 'lover'.

I used to have SUCH a huge crush on the lead, Goku. On occasions of going over to my Khala's house I would be forced by cousins to have to watch their "programs". It was truly love at first sight: I loved his strenght, his muscles, his loyalty to his child, and the fact that he was a strong fighter didnt hurt. :D

My hero, my saiyan, my first real love.

2. lazy; indolent: a lackadaisical fellow.

and

lionize –verb (used with object)
1. to treat (a person) as a celebrity: to lionize the visiting poet.
2. British. to visit or exhibit the objects of interest of (a place).
–verb (used without object)

I Liked Him...

...and then he told me he was a Cowboys fan. Cut me deep, so deep I bled Eagles green.

Im sorry, what? It was as if my mind didnt want to accept the message my ears sent it.

I saw no problems in sight: Religious, funny, smart, good looking, traditional, punjabi....

Me: Like, you mean football? (praying that somewhere in the world theres a Cowboys cricket team and he's their number one fan)
Him: Yeah, I like the Cowboys.

Newsday Tuesday Headlines

1.) Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari: Larry, I think these are stateless actors who have been operating all throughout the region. The gunmen, plus the planners, whoever they are, they are stateless actors who are holding hostage the whole world.

In an interview on Larry King Live President Zardari spoke to Larry King and denied any responsibility on behalf of Pakistan as a state for the deadly attacks on Mumbai (India) late last week. At least 179 casualties resulted from the three days of terror beginning last Wednesday. Of the 10 targets included were two top hotels: Oberoi and Taj. India openly blames Pakistani militants. You can catch the transcript of the airing in case you missed the show at: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/12/02/pakistan.zardari.lkl/index.html

2.) British Airways (BA) confirms it is in merger talks with rival Qantas (Flying Kangaroo). BA states it is looking at a possible dual-listed company structure. (For those who dont know:
A dual-listed company or DLC (also referred to as a Siamese twin) is a corporate structure which involves two listed companies with different sets of shareholders sharing ownership of one set of operational businesses. In a conventional takeover one business acquires the shares of another. However when a DLC is created, both companies continue to exist, and to have separate bodies of shareholders, but they agree to share all the risks and rewards of the ownership of all their operating businesses in a fixed proportion, laid out in the equalization agreement. The equalization agreements are set up to ensure equal treatment of both companies’ shareholders in voting and cash flow rights.) http://edition.cnn.com/2008/BUSINESS/12/02/ba.qantas/index.html

3.) Father and son injured in a Wal-Mart post-Thanksgiving trample that left one temporary store employee, 34-M, dead are suing Wal-Mart for damages/healthcare and legal expenses in the sum of 2Million.

4.) Venice sees its highest tide since 1986. The city built on water was brought to a halt when the city was flooded by a 61-inch high tide. Citizens were not warned ahead of time and though they city's inhabitants know how to live with excess water, this was an exceptional case. 3,000 people had to be evacuated. Even the city's water buses were out of commission because the boarding platforms were underwater.

What Are the Odds?

I have been driving to work in the city lately and parking for free several blocks away from the hospital. The walk is refreshing and I like getting to work on my own schedule rather than waiting for a train that loves to break down and be late for no reason at all.

As I was trying to squeeze into a tight spot this morning I was reminded of a similar situation a couple years back. There I was trying to back out of a "how-the-hell-on-Earth-did-she-park-in-that-spot?" tight fit, windows down, all alone and unable to ask someone to watch my back when I misjudged backing up by a milli-fraction of an inch and slightly grazed the car behind me. Enough for me to feel but not dent or scratch.

There was a guy walking by at the same minute I jumped out of my car to inspect. He stopped short of my car and the other and looked at me nearly pulling out my hair torn between leaving a note or not. I figured the passerby had noticed, so I looked down and exclaimed, "I slightly bumped into the car behind me. Do you see any damage? Do you think I should leave a note?" I rambled a mile a minute. Was I hoping he would say no, absolving me of any and all obligations of my civic duty?

The guy, smiling, says, "Nah, I dont think theres any damage at all. You barely bumped it. I was watching you back out." He was watching? Oh, great. A witness.

"Do you mind helping navigate me out?", I asked, almost certain he'd say yes. Who actually says no? Ok fine. He could have said no. There was nothing tying him to stay.

"Uh, sure.", he said rather hesitatingly which made me think perhaps not everyone is nice enough to stop and help out a poor soul.

As he was directing me out from between a rock and a hard place, he laughed and asked how I got in in the first place. "I was here first!! This idiot boxed me in!" I screamed. He raised his eyebrows at my ... screaming, maybe?

"Ok", I say to the stranger with the killer dimples -- whoah!! so glad I noticed afterwards instead of beforehand so I didnt lose concentration, pshh although what difference would it make I mean I semi-bumped into the car before dimpled cutie walked up anyway -- "As long as you forever hold your peace, Im ok with keeping this on the low." I smile, for the first time throughout the ordeal and look up to see him not smiling, for the first time throughout the ordeal.

"Uh I cant do that. I cant promise the owner wont find out." he said.

I felt the earth move below my feet and thought I was going to pass out. Was he playing games? WTH? Why let me go on and on thinking he wouldnt be a good samaritan. I would have left a note if it werent for HIM!

"Why the sudden need to be a good samaritan?! You TOLD me not to leave a note! I barely even touched the other car. And now you're acting like you're gonna rat me out??" Face flushed, seconds from crying.

He smiled and said, "Well, yeah. Thats my car!"

...well, damn! What are the freakkkkin' odds???

I tried my best to gain composure, cleared my throat and asked, "Would you like me to leave you a note?"

"Only if it includes your phone number." he said grinning.

Selfish bastard. :P

Pirate's Booty

OK so I'll admit: I LOATHE black Friday. I avoid malls, outlets, and the like altogether if its possible. I cant say why. I honestly dont know why. This year I had a few items on my list that made it worth my while to step out and shop for. I had two things to check off: a.) a GPS navigation system, and b.) a memory stick for my camera.

I went to Circuit City (Best Buy is so played out haha) and bought the new TomTom navie. Its apparently wonderfully incredible though I have yet to try it out, and I bought an 8GB memory stick which promises to be able to take a million and one pics. I plan to take the navie out for a test run as soon as my migraine passes. Maybe tomorrow iA. The memory stick I tested out yesternight at the mehndi I went to.

Holidays

Thanksgiving weekend is notorious for turkey, family, and football. Recently, its fast-becoming a popular wedding weekend, too. Especially if you're of the south asian heritage. For us, weddings are not just limited to one day. We have traditionally a whole week's worth of festivities leading up to the final rukhsati, bride's departure from her family. Many in the US only practice three: the henna, the nikkah/rukhsati, and the walima (dinner thrown by guy's family in recognition of the consummation of marriage union).

Me? Im just glad Im home. With family. Surrounded by friends. Its a really crazy weekend and Im battling a cold thats lasted over two weeks. It's tough to switch gears at first. Living alone makes you really cage-y sometimes. You get easily frazzled by seeing soo many people all at once in one place. Still, its times like this that one misses when one goes back to the mundane, regular, day-to-day everyday grind.

In short: I dont want this weekend to end. :)

Newsday Tuesday

Judge overturns Florida ban on Adoption by Gays (CNN) -- A Florida circuit judge Tuesday struck down a 31-year-old state law that prevents gays and lesbians from adopting children, allowing a North Miami man to adopt two half-brothers he and his partner have raised as foster children since 2004.

Dad raped daughters
for 27 years (CNN) -- A British man was jailed Tuesday for raping two of his daughters and fathering nine children over 27 years, a case with echoes of Austria's Josef Fritzl. The two daughters were made pregnant 19 times; there were nine births, five miscarriages and five terminations. Seven of the children are alive but suffer genetic deformities. The father, who cannot be named for legal reasons banning the identification of his victims and the surviving children, pleaded guilty Tuesday at Sheffield Crown Court, northern England, and was sentenced to serve 25 life sentences to run concurrently.

McNabb's Benching Could Signal End of Turbulent Era in Philly (NFL) - That life preserver Andy Reid just tossed might have helped keep the quarterback afloat if it were equipped with a couple of vibrant receivers, steadfast pass protection and a commitment to balance the Eagles offense. It was not. So, the McNabb trek will likely pick up where it left off with this quarterback in a state of football flux -- his team, too -- spiraling downward and steaming toward a split. Soon. Very soon.It is nearly impossible to imagine that McNabb is going to be the Eagles quarterback beyond these five games remaining. It's likely he will be pulled again, benched again, before the Eagles exit this middling, 5-5-1 season full of broken promise and hope. Reid explained that he benched McNabb after the first half on Sunday against the Ravens to light a spark. When McNabb left, the Eagles trailed, 10-7. In his absence, the score was 26-0 Ravens. The 36-7 drubbing was beyond a wakeup call for the Eagles. McNabb will start on Thursday.

Dubai's sex-on-beach couple Escape Jail Term (CNN) -- A British couple convicted for having sex on a public beach in Dubai will not face jail after a judge suspended their prison sentences, their lawyer said Tuesday. The couple, Michelle Palmer and Vincent Acors, had faced a three-month sentence, but they were freed on bail in October pending an appeal. Hassan Mattar, one of their lawyers, said he was trying to get permission for Palmer -- who worked in Dubai -- to stay in the United Arab Emirates, and for Acors to travel back to Britain. Acors had been on a business trip to Dubai when he was arrested. The United Arab Emirates, where Dubai is located, is home to thousands of expatriates and is among the most moderate Gulf states. Still, the oil-rich kingdom adheres to certain Islamic rules.

Teacher Accused of Punching Student, Police Say (CNN) - An elementary school teacher was arrested for punching an 8-year-old student in the face this month, Fort Lauderdale police said Tuesday. David Adam Grant is accused of striking an 8-year-old student at a Fort Lauderdale, Florida, school. David Adam Grant, 36, an art teacher at Sunland Elementary School, turned himself in to police Tuesday in connection with the November 5 incident, authorities said in a written statement.

Weekend Update

Ugh. Busy times. I missed thirsty thursday in its second installment on my blog. :(

AND i missed fashionista friday! :( :(

Where to start? I saw the Twilight movie. *yay* It was really really amazing. What was most incredible was seeing characters from a book come to life. For the past few months Id had an image in my mind of the town, the main characters, etc and its neat to see that I wasnt too far off from what the movie writers/director/producer came up with. Oh! And Im totally in love with Robert Pattinson (Cedric from Harry Potter)!! I shall dub him McVampy! :P I wish he'd bite me. ;)

Saturday night I went to a young professionals' potluck dinner. Met lots of cool people. Saw a lot of them again on Sunday at my very first book club meeting. We read "Madras on Rainy Days" by Samina Ali. The author even conferenced in to discuss the book with us, answer questions and shed some light on themes in the book. As an inspiring writer I held onto every word she said and I was impressed when she chose not to define certain character traits in the book. She left a lot up to us readers to figure out. A lot of times its easy in writing to want to say everything/give too much away. But she didnt. She left some stuff for us to come to as we see fit.

I cant wait til the day I become a published writer iA and have people discussing my books.

TWILIGHT 11.21.08 - Cant Wait!!

If you don't know, you better ask somebody!

BROKEN GLASS: DO NOT TOUCH!!! This means YOU Farah!

I was 110% THAT girl today. THAT girl who sees broken glass and instead of steering clear says, Ooo, let me touch!!!! One of the cabinets in our office had the glass shatter and form like a mosaic design. I thought it looked so cool I HAD to touch it (a force greater than me compelled me). Just as I was running my hand down along the surface, my Oooo became OWWW!!!! My secretary looked up just in time to hear me say, "Dumbass move!!!" and rush towards the sink dripping blood. I had sliced my finger open. Because it felt like a shard of glass was still sticking in my finger I kept squeezing to try to get it out while running it under water, a combination that not only BURNED but also produced more blood from the wound, naturally.

Did I mention I hadnt eaten all day and am prone to blackout spells? Just as the room began to spin my secretary rushed over and helped me with paper towels applying pressure on the cut.

The funniest thing was when my other secretary got wind of situation, she laughed at me and said our third secretary --- one I teasingly call an airhead -- had done the same thing yesterday and gotten hurt as well. We are now, lovingly, labeled Dumb & Dumber in our department. My supervisor found out and says, "You, too?? I'm going to call and have them come fix it." I told her to get on it because I couldnt guarantee I wouldnt do it again..........it was too pretty to pass up! In my defense, even my ATTENDING touched it!! But she didnt get hurt.

Above is the pic of my hand. Dull, throbbing ache the rest of the day. Not fun.

Ok, so I know today is newsday tuesday but Im still sick. I came home and took alka seltzer cough and cold medicine which knocked me out and I fell asleep for five hours. I just woke up. I'll post tomorrow because there were some interesting stories I came across, just dont have the strength to post on them right now. I will comment on the economy and how falling prices are WONDERFUL for shoppers: I finally bought my first pair of tall boots. Its hard to be worried about the future when you buy TWO pairs of tall boots for UNDER $100!!!! It was really was fun trying on hundreds of different pairs and snapping pics to send my sis and friends for their opinions. I finally decided on this pair below and a pair of black ones.

Cough Day Monday

Blahhhhhhhh. I hate being sick. I hate coughing. I hate taking medicine. I hate being cold. I cant be funny when Im coughing. I fell asleep when I came back from work in a frantic attempt to do ANYTHING that made me instantly warm. Now, Im up like its 12p.

I fasted today. BIG MISTAKE! Do you know how hard it is cough all day without water?! Impossibly hard. Not fasting tomorrow. Even though fasting right now is soooo easy -- sun sets ten minutes after it rises. :) Piece of cake.

I DONT HEART LAUNDRY DAY!!! GRR!

So for the longest time now Ive been neglecting certain homely chores and one of them includes laundry. I usually go home to my parents' with bags and bags but lately every time Ive been home I've either been in a rush and didnt load up my car or went home to Bmore and honestly was too busy to be bothered by laundry. Ok confession: I seriously dont know where my parents' laundry room is. Oh wait! I know, I know: its in the basement in a room off the rec area with the huge pool table that I cant seem to strip myself away from long enough... yeah that sounds more "Farah-ish".

It takes me from 6 in the morn til 12p to gather all my laundry, sorted too of course but you'd think it was sorted by color the way it took so much time. 12-1p I coughed. Stupid itchy throat. I kept complaining Friday that this tickle in my throat had me dry-coughing like crazy. My chest didnt start hurting until midday and I realized I would soon get my wish of asking for a reason to cough. Today is the worst. Chest and throat hurt. And yeah, no more dry cough. I coughed up ... "stuff" from 12-1p.

Then the game started: Eagles/Bengals. Have you noticed just how ugly the bright orange and black combo is?? No? Checkout Bengals players. Gross.

Finally made it out to the laundromat. The first three machines I use are broken. Not funny when youve already loaded up clothes and detergent... and quarters. :( Yeah, that experience had me wanting to scream! Or call Papa crying so he feels bad and buys me a dryer.

See, I have a washer in apt, but the dryer broke before I got here and was taken out. I realize dryers are awful for the environment but my loveeeeee of fluffy towels has me saying, "Let the next gen. deal with it!!!" :D

Im home now, for the next hour. Wanted to catch the end of the game, hang up the clothes in the washer so they can dry, and make myself a very much needed and well deserved steamy cup of chai with honey. Yum!

Go Green!!

Fashionista Friday

...spilling into why-did-i-stay-up-so-late-last night???-Saturday morning! Attempting to post before my much needed steamy cup of coffee. See, last Saturday I nearly passed out when I attempted a four mile run pre-coffee/liquids/breakfast. Im not running yet, just posting. We'll see how far I get.

F A S H I O N I S T A F R I D A Y!! woohoo!

Ok so you dont have to be a fashion fanatic to notice trends these days. With all the magazines bunching out of racks at checkout lines with tips and pics (even magazines for petlovers) its hard to miss the trends. Ok, not to mention that once theyre public knowledge, all you see everywhere is people going overboard with every single trend on their person. That... is not healthy.

First things first, where would we be without rules? Im a stickler for lists. Its the Virgo curse. Outlined neatly by WikiHow http://www.wikihow.com/Become-a-Fashionista is a world of information on becoming a fashionista.

Words of advice: Don't go balls to the wall. Go slow, find yourself, do what feels comfortable to you, always. Confidence is the key to rocking out any outfit and fashion trend. When we feel comfortable, we really shine. So follow the rules with a level-head. Breathe in, exhale slowly, repeat three times. Hope this helps:

How to Become a Fashionista

To be a Fashionista you need to be up to date and find something that looks great on you. Follow these simple steps and find the stylish diva in you.

1. The first thing to do is your homework. Not for school, I mean study up on fashion. Start with the magazines lying around your house. As long as they are from this year or some what current, they are a good place to start. Find tips on what is new and what staples from your own closet you can use. Look for the pieces that you see multiple times, because then you will know they are in style. Another place to look is on-line. A great site is called Hel-looks. It shows street styles from Helsinki, Finland. Street style is a great place to find inspiration. Even if you just type in Street Style in google you can find some good sites, like the cool hunter. Finally, watch shows on TV that are based on fashion. Shows on the Style channel are good, but they can sometimes be geared towards older women so be careful.
2. While you are doing your "homework" keep a journal with all of the looks and clothes that you like. Jot down pieces of clothing, colors and outfits that you like. Separate them into things that you own and things that you want to add to your wardrobe. Use pictures from magazines or words. This will be where you base your new look.
3. The next thing to do is check out what you already have and see if there is anything that you can use. Keep in mind that you cannot change you style over night. Also, you want to incorporate you personal stlye into what is in fashion. If you are "preppy" mix your blazer or polo with a funky skirt . If you wear a plain T-shirt every day, try to layer them with a cardigan or add some cool jewelry.
4. Now you are on your way towards great style. The next thing to do is go out and find some new pieces to add to your closet. Here, you have to take into account your financial situation. If you can't or are not willing to spend a lot on clothes, then thrift stores like Goodwill or Plato's Closet, or stores like Target are a great places to get started. When shopping second hand try to find clothes that are in good condition and are good quality. Also, keep in mind you can alter a long dress and make it a fun mini just by hemming it. So, if you find something you like have a open mind ans you can always alter it. If you are willing to spend a lot more, try out Urban Outfitters or Antropologie. Ask some whose style you admire where they shop and if you are friendly with them see if they could help you with your new look. A common love of fashion is a great way to make new friends. If money is of no concern to you, then what are you doing reading this, go get a stylist. There is no need to splurge all on one outing. Keep your eyes out for pieces you need and you will begin to accumulate some great clothes.
5. Now to put every thing together. Go back to the journal you made earlier and try to put together some new looks. Find a fill length mirror and just try on lots of things until you find some outfits you like. Don't be afraid to step out of the box fashion is all about doing something new and being the first to try something.
6. Now that you are a fashionista, keep up with the trends but remember to always be you!

Tips

* If you feel good in it and you like it then you will most likely look great in it. It is all about the attitude you have. While clothes may make you look better, the most important part is that you feel better.
* Don't forget to accessorize. A great necklace can complete a look. Before going out ask yourself whether your outfit is missing something or if there is too much. Also, shoes can complete change your outfit, so make sure you look put together with a great pair of flats, flip- flops, or heels. If heels scare you, try a low espadrille, because they will stay on and usually are pretty comfortable.
* Feeling good in your clothes is extremely important. If some thing is in style, but it doesn't work on you or you feel uncomfortable in it, just try something else. Also, you can be stylish at any age or with any body, just find what works for you.
* Skinny jeans, Skinny jeans, Skinny jeans. They will always be in style. and they even out a flowing top and look great with heels. If in doubt cinch at the waist. Get something tailored to fit you, don't wear something the wrong size.
* Remember that a fashionista is not a fashion victim, as most magazines try to emphasize. A fashionista is a woman who has found her own individual style and knows how to mix it with what's trendy at the moment. "This or that item is a must have for any fashionista" is a phrase often used in the magazines. Ignore it; only buy something if it fits your style.

Warnings

* Don't splurge on one thing, because you will feel pressured to wear it when it might not work.
* If people at your school or work all wear the same thing, then you need to make a positive change and be unique. Do not be afraid that some one else won't like what you wear, because if you are confident in it, they will notice you before they notice what you are wearing.
* Never wear running sneakers unless you are running or at the gym.
* Never wear Uggs Everyday! its very very bad for an attempting fashionista.
* Use jeans as your fall back, do not wear them more that four times in a week unless they are very different colors or styles.

Im on step 3 currently. Im in the process of going through all my clothing and finally parting with crap I know I will never wear and every now and then I come across something and think, "OMG thats so in today. I can pair that with..."

ACCESORIZE!! My fave! This seems like fashion's pinch hitter. You can wear plain nothingness but if you use big bold accessorize, your outfit can warp into fabulous in no time!! Accessories include: hats, belts, jewelry, gloves, bags, sunglasses, flowers & feathers. Pretty much you can consider anything thats not part of your original outfit an accessory.

ps. TRY NOT TO MAKE A GOOD LOOKING GUY YOUR ACCESSORY! :P

The Great Stem Cell Debate

In the upcoming weeks as President-Elect Obama's transition takes place, the words stem cell research will be thrown around more frequently and I decided to use this as my first Thirst-For-Knowledge-Thursdays topic. First and foremost I will describe what SCs are., what their purpose is, where they come from, how they will be useful in curing certain illnesses. Then, I will lead into the controversy surrounding the use of ESCs in research, arguments for and against, and finally pros and cons. I will also try and impart some religious perspective on the matter as well, mainly Islamic and Roman Catholic.

First and foremost, stem cells are cells that have not gone through differentiation and are capable of producing cells from all over the body: liver cells, blood cells, brain cells, heart muscle cells etc. After fertilization occurs, sperm and egg uniting, within the first five days, as the cells divide they are each capable of becoming a complete human being. As time goes on, however, the cells specialize and they pass the point of totipotency -- ability to differentiate into any cells.

Where do stem cells come from? Because its crucial that stem cells be totipotent, the sources for stem cells are limited. One source is from embryos. Embryos created during in-vitro fertilization, a process in which egg and sperm are united outside of the body in a lab plate and allowed to grow. After the union, the embryos are implanted into the uterus. Because the chances of in-vitro fertilization working are slim, several embryos are created and frozen or destroyed afterwards when not needed. Researchers learned that embryos were a fabulous source for stem cells. The embryos that do not make it to the uterus have these cells extracted from them. Stem cells are also found in adults and umbilical cord blood.

The good news? Stem cells can be used to produce specialized cells in patients with illnesses where human cells are attacked or destroyed. In the case of liver disease, stem cells can be used to produce an entire organ, thus bypassing the need for donors and possible transplant rejections. In Alzheimer's patients, stem cells can be used to produce more brain cells. In diabetics, stem cells can create cells that produce insulin.

With proper research, stem cells can revolutionize medicine.

But with research comes funding and with funding comes controversy over who pays the bill. President Bush claims he never was against stem cell research, just the notion that stem cell research is something the government should pay for.

Here comes the controversy: staunch pro-lifers and conservatives and Roman catholics alike, all have serious issues with where the stem cells are obtained, particularly embryos. The Vatican already has voiced its concern to Obama as a warning for his plans to overturn Bush's policies on federal restrictions against stem cell research mainly for the reason that creating life -- be it outside of a body -- for the sole purpose of getting cells for research, then destroying the embryos is unethical and uncalled for. The Vatican urges scientists to dapple in the other avenues for obtaining stem cells such as adult stem cells and umbilical cord blood as a ways and means of obtaining de-differentiated cells. It will not support the killing of embryos for the sake of scientific research, especially where all other avenues have not been fully exhausted.

Islam has a slightly differing view on ESCs based on the Islamic perspective on what is considered a human being and what is not. If conception occurs outside of the human body through in-vitro methods, the embryo is not a human until it is implanted into a womb. Any and all embryos that are destroyed are not termed as infanticide. Therefore making ESCR Shari'ah compliant.

While there are other avenues, experts in the field agree that the stem cells from adults are not capable of specializing into a multitude of cells as much as ESCs and there is a greater potential for finding cures with using ESCs. Islam is so wonderfully constructed and designed that it makes me proud to further note that Islam encourages those practices and activities which will relieve human disease and suffering. It is not only allowed but considered fard kifayah to pursue this research by all means necessary.

Insha'Allah may we uncover great things as a result.

Foot-In-Mouth

Ahem, so about those paper gowns in doc's offices that leave everything exposed...

...the gown was cotton. I tied it in the back. How I managed to get everything covered is beyond me. Wrapped all tight like a mummy.

It could ONLY happen to me, seriously, the doc left me in the room to change back and meet her outside and I get STUCK in my goddamn goddamn gown! YES! I pulled the wrong string and instead of having the tie open, it further tightened into a KNOT!!

WHT?! Why me? Seriously? Why me?? After struggling and stretching so far back to make yogis everywhere proud of me for a good five minutes I finally managed to untie the top tie and then let the gown slide down.

Yes, Im THAT girl.. THAT girl who got stuck in her hospital gown.

Words-of-the-Day Wednesday

The point of this is ideally to have me increase my vocabulary and the best way to do this is to read the newspaper, listen to conversations (dont eavesdrop just keep an ear out) for juicy words that stick out that I might not know. But, I didnt have any today so I've compiled a generic list going through a word list of ones I found interesting.

1.) discursive (adj.) rambling, lacking order (The professor’s discursive lectures seemed to be about every subject except the one initially described.)

rambling...kinda like my rants!! :D

2.) nefarious (adj.) heinously villainous (Although Dr. Meanman’s nefarious plot to melt the polar icecaps was terrifying, it was so impractical that nobody really worried about it.)

ok honestly this is not falling off a list of top 5 words to describe Farah...

3.) quagmire (n.) a difficult situation (We’d all like to avoid the kind of military quagmire characterized by the Vietnam War.)

kind of like being between a rock and a hard place. I hope you Family Guy fans didnt think I was talking about one of the show's characters. :D no judgement, really.

4.) stolid (adj.) expressing little sensibility, unemotional (Charles’s stolid reaction to his wife’s funeral differed from the passion he showed at the time of her death.)

no comment.

5.) upbraid (v.) to criticize or scold severely (The last thing Lindsay wanted was for Lisa to upbraid her again about missing the rent payment.)

oh crap!! I knew I forgot something! thank God Im certain Dr. D would never upbraid me for late rent. sooo absentminded!! :(

Learn them for the first time, or again, but use them as much as you can throughout the week.

:)

Dreaded Appointment

Ick. I hate doctor's appointments, I hate the stupid paper gowns that leave EVERYTHING exposed. I hate the lighting. I hate the smell of a doctor's office -- you know what I mean -- seriously if it smelled like a bakery I'd never leave. I hate the nurses who always blow up the blood pressure cuff too tight making your eyes bulge out of their sockets. I hate HATE HATE peeing in a cup -- I can NEVER pee on demand. I hate the table they make you lie on. And dont even get me started on the fit of giggles that rack my body as she asks, "Does this hurt?" No its just uncomfortable ho, shouldnt you buy me dinner first????

:P

4:15p today.

Ugh.

I'll be back for words-of-the-day-Wednesday!

Newsday Tuesday

I got up earlier than usual today to check out local, national and international headlines on news desks this Veteran's Day morning.

Locally, here in Philly, its all about shootings (surprise surprise), the South St. bridge reconstruction and shutdown for 2 years, and an odd burglary story. A couple called the police to report a burglary in their home in Upper Darby only to be arrested themselves for allegedly growing marijuana! You would think if they knew police were on their way that they would try some way to hide the, uh, evidence.

Top Headlines in national news:
1.) President Bush invites President-Elect Obama and family to the White House. Bush and Obama spoke for an hour and a half most likely discussing foreign policy and the economy. One of Bush's major policies Obama plans to reverse: the federal restrictions on embryonic stem cell research. YAY! Other items on the agenda: cutting funding for troops and closing the US prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
2.) Stock market continues to fall -- gas prices have fallen further as well.
3.) St. Johns, AZ - the 8 year old boy who shot and killed his father and father's friend goes to court today. Its obvious he shot the two, but whats not clear is why. There are whispers of the killing being a retaliation for abuse.
4.) Phoenix Mars Lander's mission ends. The lander, which started its mission in the end of May of this year, has been silent since Nov. 2nd. Phoenix conducted five months of research on soil samples for analysis with onboard scientific instruments. Scientists have learned a lot about the chemistry of the clumpy, clay-like soil which contains perchlorates, toxic to humans, but a possible source of energy for some microbes.
5.) America's top 5 healthiest grocery stores: a. Whole foods, b. Safeway, c. Harris Teeter, d. Trader Joe's. and e. Hannaford

Bonus: I have to add Palin blames GOP for the loss in the election.

Internationally:
A convoy carrying water tank trailers and two humvees to troops in Afghanistan is attacked in northwestern Pakistan. A moderate earthquake shakes northwest China. Bombings in Iraq and Pakistan. 4,300 year old pyramid discovered in Egypt.

I really enjoyed reading all of these stories all day and comparing them to differences in reporting by different news sources. For the most part, the news was consistent. Made for a lot
of interesting talk today. My only concern is that my blog post didnt get published til late (i was out with friends) and also that I wish I had more time to write more than just headlines and few lines.

I'll have to work on this section. I learned a lot today and Im thinking I might just make news part of my everyday routine as opposed to just a Tuesday item.

The One That Lived

Not many things in my life are a given, but one thing is for sure: I kill any and all plant life that enters my home. How, then, is it that the orchid continues to thrive? Believe it or not its sprouting buds that promise flowers again soon, iA. I had the orchid delivered to me on my birthday back in September and everyone told me they are the hardest thing to care for even though they require little water and a moderate amount of sunlight.

Flowers are the go-to-gift choice of most men for women. I believe chocolates are a close second. The thing about flowers, however, is that they die eventually which can be a bummer. The good thing: Most relationships outlast a bouquet of flowers.

My advice to the fellas: Go with a flowering plant instead of cut flowers. This way the plant can continue to grow along with your relationship, if you're lucky. The only risk you run is having the plant outlive your relationship. Hehe.

I swear Im not above giving it dirty looks but I really love it. Besides, Im just tickled that its still alive and doing well mA.

One out of two ain't bad. :D

Alhamdullilah for Nephews and Getting Punk'd by God

"deer farah khala i love you very very much but i just cant come to your house love idrees"

Thats an actual text message that my five year old nephew sent me himself. Cute is definitely an understatement mA. I miss him so much. His birthday is coming up this weekend. He'll be six iA on Saturday. My sis and I are taking him and princess Fatima to see Madagascar 2. The first one is his fave. I have to admit its one of my faves, too. He's seen it more than a million times and can quote most of it. This really brightened up my day.

So this whole rishta thing has been on everyone's mind lately. If you're not single yourself, you know of someone who is and somehow theyve asked you to help them so its your problem as well. Having had one end for pretty much no reason at all other than divine intervention -- not really blaming God but stating its His way or no way at all in this world and He just wasnt satisfied with the way things were -- things have been a bit raw lately when the topic of marriage comes around.

Yesterday was especially tough. I usually leave Sundays to make calls to family members, catch up with lengthy conversations about what ever is going on with each. Post-relationship Sundays are the hardest. Everyone wants to know what happened or what didnt and why. The "why" makes me cringe because I dont have the answer sometimes.

Well, anyway, so yesterday I had tried my bestest to keep my optimism and by the time I reached out to my eldest sister there was no more left. She got the Farah who was basically giving up -- I know it sounded much worse than I felt because I was on my way to Jersey, traffic sucked, I was hungry and late so I was already irritable.

NO ONE'S GETTING MARRIED ANYMORE!! I screamed at her. Its all just bullshit. I just found out of ANOTHER wedding thats been cancelled. This sucks big time. I just want to forget about rishtas for ONE day. I want to go hang out with my friends and have a nice time and not be bothered by all this mess.

I get to my friends house and one of my other friends there was having a real life rishta talk happen with her family and the lucky guy. I was faced with one of THOSE situations... those I-want-to-run-but-cant-go-anywhere situations. The rishta, iA if Allah (swt) has meant for it to be, will be perfect. The guy and girl are simply made for each other, in my honest opinion.

It was really cute and sweet to witness... once I managed to swallow the lump in my throat --- with a spoonful of biryani. :D I wish the "couple" all the best in finalizing the biggest deal of their life. I just thought it was so ironic for God to have me witness the traditional planning of a rishta just as I was swearing it all off altogether. Makes you just silly enough to hope and pray, again, that you have it the same way, too. And iA in time, may we all be as lucky.

Sick at Home

Its really a shame when the only time you get to update your blog is when you're sick at home. I had a great weekend. Spent time with family, watched the Phillies get one step closer to winning the World Series... yay! Partied a little too much apparently cuz this morning I couldnt really remember who or where or why I existed.

Just a little dazed and disoriented. I got a flu shot last week and all weekend Ive been braving waves of nausea... last night was not pretty.

Anyway, sometime early last week I had planned to post and left the window up but never got the chance to start typing.. now Ive forgotten what it was I so desperately wanted to write.

Thursday Im finally going to The Eastern State Penitentiary's Terror Behind the Walls Halloween haunted maze!! Im really excited as it claims to be a well-worth it spook! Check out the website: http://www.easternstate.org/halloween/

People in makeup and costumes jumping out to scare the living daylights out of you!!! Good stuff!

Scary movies anyone? SO I hear that the Strangers is out on dvd. I really really want to see it though everyone who has seen it is warning me not to. Id still love to do a haunted hayride as well. There's just something creepy about being led into a forest on a poorly put together wagon. :D

I love this time of year! Fall is my absolute FAVORITEST season! Love the leaves changing, love the way the sun beats down warm against your skin countering the harsh gusty wind. Ahhhhh...fall.

Im home..........bleh. I cant believe I have TO DO lists even when Im HOME, sick. On the agenda for today:

1.) stay out of trouble ... hahaha
2.) try and keep what goes down... down!
3.) WARM LIQUIDS
4.) (if the room stops spinning) clean out closests and FINALLY donate clothes to charity.

Does anyone see anything fun there?

ugh.....i didnt think so either.

No Pushing

Defense mechanisms are supposed to help protect us.

...why, then, does my mind feel the need to push people out of my heart in order to lessen the blow?

I wish there was some way to better control it, to silence it and tune out the alarms.

When do you figure your mind has no idea what its doing and decide to use your heart instead?

Its 11:43p. Im tired but so into my new readings but I know I should go to sleep.

Ugh. Sleep wins out........

Goodbyes

Goodbyes are hard.

Islam and Governmental Branches

Growing up in the US, every curriculum is complete with lessons in government and politics because for each citizen it is essential to know how the system works, what our rights are, and what rules and regulations we must obide by in order to remain in line.

The Federal government consists of three major branches: legislative, executive and judicial. The legislative branch deals with creating laws and guidelines, the executive branch carries out the laws and the judicial branch judges the laws.

It occurred to me that religion is basically a government governing the actions and thinking of a specific group of people. Holy books make up the legislative branch as the specific set of rules and guidelines. Followers or believers make up the executive branch as they are the ones carrying out the regulations and principles set forth by the legislative branch. Lastly, the group of knowledgeable scholars who have studied the legislature collectively make up the judicial branch deciding what is acceptable and how it applies to present-day times.

In the case of Islam, the three entities are the Qur'an, believers, and the sunnah of the Prophet (saw) and learned scholars/Imams, collectively.

There is no questioning Qur'an as the legislative entity. It is to this day in its entirety the most absolute and direct word of Allah (swt). The executive branch, in contrast, is not so absolute and has divided into smaller branches, ie sects which further define the judicial body that is considered the accepted authority on judging the method of execution. Note: In the case of government, the Judicial body judges the validity of the law, but because there is no arguing with Qur'an, what's argued is the execution method of what is written in the Quran. There is a difference. Of these executive bodies, the most famous are the Sunnis and the Shiites.

For fear of misrepresenting any aspect of either sect I will defer to what is the accepted definition of each group and their respected authoritative figure/figures who dictate what is to be followed and how:

Sunnis: The word "Sunni" in Arabic comes from a word meaning "one who follows the traditions of the Prophet." For Sunnis, his (saw) way of life dictates how each Muslim should strive to live their day to day life.

The judicial branch of the Sunni sect is divided into four schools of thought: Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali.

* The Hanafi Madhhab: Imam Abu Hanifa, who was the 'founder' of the Hanafi school, lived in what is now modern-day Iraq, not long after the prophet Muhammad's death. It is reported that Imam Abu Hanifa studied under many teachers. He also met the "companion" (sahābi) Anas ibn Malik, making Imam Abu Hanifa one of the tābi'ūn, or second generation in oral transmission from Muhammad.
* The Maliki Madhhab: Imam Malik was born shortly thereafter in Medina. There are reports that they lived at the same time and, although Malik was much younger, their mutual respect is well-known. In fact, one of Abu Hanifa's main students, on whose teaching a lot of the Hanafi school is based, studied under Imam Malik as well.
* The Shafi'i Madhhab: Imam Shafi'i was also taught by both Abu Hanifa's students and Imam Malik, and his respect for both men is also well-documented.
* The Hanbali Madhhab: Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal studied under Imam Shafi'i, and consequently there are many similarities between the two madhhabs.

Shiites: The Shiite Muslims believe that following the Prophet Muhammad's death, leadership should have passed directly to his cousin/son-in-law, Ali. Throughout history, Shiite Muslims have not recognized the authority of elected Muslim leaders, choosing instead to follow a line of Imams which they believe have been appointed by the Prophet Muhammad or God Himself. The word "Shiite" in Arabic means a group or supportive party of people. The commonly-known term is shortened from the historical "Shia-t-Ali," or "the Party of Ali." They are also known as followers of "Ahl-al-Bayt" or "People of the Household" (of the Prophet).

The judicial body of this sect is subdivided into three categories: the Twelver, Zaidi, and Ismaili.

Twelver Shi'a believe in the lineage of the Twelve Imams. The Twelver Shi'a faith is predominantly found in Iran (est. 90%) , Azerbaijan (est. 85%), Bahrain (est. 75%), Iraq (est. 65%), Yemen (est. 45%), Lebanon (est. 35%) [9], Kuwait (est. 35%), Turkey (est. 25%), Albania (est. 20%), Pakistan (est. 20%) and Afghanistan (est. 20%). [10][11].

The Zaidi dispute the succession of the fifth Twelver Imam, Muhammad al-Baqir, because he did not stage a revolution against the corrupt government, unlike Zaid ibn Ali. They do not believe in a normal lineage, but rather that any descendant of Hasan ibn Ali or Husayn ibn Ali who stages a revolution against a corrupt government is an imam. The Zaidi are mainly found in Yemen.

The Ismaili dispute the succession of the seventh Twelver Imam, Musa al-Kadhim, believing his older brother Ismail bin Jafar actually succeeded their father Jafar al-Sadiq, and did not predecease him like Twelver Shi'a believe. Ismaili form small communities in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, India, Yemen, China and Saudi Arabia[12] and have several subbranches.

Special Characteristics of Ramadan

1. Observing the fourth pillar of Islam has been prescribed during this month, and it is one of the best means by which a person attains piety and forgiveness of sins.

2. The first revelation of the Qur'an as guidance for humanity was given to the Prophet (pbuh) during this month.

3. The sunnah of performing the tarawih prayer is observed during this month.

4. Ramadan contains Laylatul-Qadr, which is better than a thousand months.

5. The great battle of Badr between the Muslims and the unbelievers took place during Ramadan in the second year of the Hijrah.

6. The Muslims re-entered Makkah victorious during Ramadan in the eighth year of the Hijrah. After this conquest people began to enter the fold of Islam in multitudes, and Makkah became free of polytheism and evil.

Hurricane Hanna and the Vegetable Thief

Hurricane Hanna, wreaking havoc on the Atlantic coast this weekend. Little do you know, Hurricane Hanna's been keeping all my family on their toes all my life! Hanna is my elder sister. :D I tease in jest. She's embarking on one of the biggest journeys of her life this year. May Allah (swt) bless her and make every success hers.

So last night as Im settling into my papasan chair for a Friday night ritual of books, no calls, tv I get an unexpected visitor at my door.

Ugh, are you kidding me? Do I HAVE to get up? Ive been soo tired lately, fasting is one culprit but I think its also the change in seasons. Its got everyone down.

I get up and open the door to an sari-wearing, hair pulled back in a bun, Indian woman. Its my neighbor... I think.

GOD! I knowww its awful. Ive been here two years and I have no clue who my neighbors are and I have, in passing, maybe said a total of five words to them and they were all, "hi!".

Me: Hi. (for the sixth time in two years)
LadyInSari: I pick two vegetable. I take? Ok, na?

Excuse me, what?
Me: Im sorry?
LIS: I see two vegetable (she points to my backyard and turns to show me), I pick. Ok, na?

Aah, she saw two vegetables on THIS side of the fence which she hopped, trespassing -- guilty, and she decided to pick the two vegetables -- defacing of personal property -- guilty, and then she took said vegetables -- theft, GUILTY!, and now she wants to one: confess and two: ask if its ok. (three: still take it even if I say no?)

Me: I dont mind, but its not my garden. The garden belongs to the lady upstairs. (We live in quad duplexes-- four apartments...two up/two down. The lady upstairs is my landlady, my professor from college.) You have to ask her.

Then I smile.
LIS: Oh, no. Ok.

She's still looking at me as if she's waiting for me just to say ONE motion condoning her thievery and she will glide away, a free woman.
Me: Yeah, you have to ask her. Its not my garden. (My landlady grows vegetables??? Really?? Wow, LIS's got good eyes to spot vegetables so far away. I LIVE here and I didnt know that!)

I say bye and shut the door, not bothering to look through the window at the moral route my neighbor decides to walk down.

Why Dates?

I had a co-worker ask me what the significance was for breaking our fasts with dates. I thought about it, and thought about it and then realized that Id never really researched the significance of using dates. I suppose Id never questioned it before.

Of course, dates are an excellent source of nutrition, so its a good choice to open a long fast from eating with something simple, dates and water or juice.

I searched on the internet and I came across a few sites that simply answered the question of why we use dates. Its because thats what the Prophet (saw) did and it has become tradition.

During the month of Ramadan, everything we do reaps extra benefits and blessings. When it comes to performing Sunnah, why not do those things even more in Ramadan so as to be recognized as the humble servants of Allah from the Prophets' (saw) own Ummah?

When it comes to dates and breaking fast: JUST DO IT!

:)

Significance of Fasting

As muslims, we all know that we have to fast during the month of Ramadan. There are many benefits to fasting, such as the medical benefits that were outlined in the previous post, but there are a few other significances of fasting as described below lifted from an article found on the website: http://www.islamweb.net/eramdan/Significance%20of%20Fasting.htm

First significance

Fasting is linked with true faith in Allaah that is why it has been reported that fasting is secret worship since a person may break his fast if he wishes by eating, drinking or simply by not making the intention to fast (in which case his fast will not be accepted even if he remains fasting the whole day). Fasting, then, is a hearty, secret worship that concerns only the servant and his creator.

When the servant knowingly gives up the things and acts that nullify the fast, despite his ability to reach them in secret, he gives indeed strong evidence of his certain belief that Allaah watches over him in both his manifest and secret deeds. There is no doubt that in this kind of conduct is a significant training to strengthen faith in Allaah.

Second significance

Fasting is also a training for the servant to aspire to the Hereafter since by fasting he gives up some of the worldly matters looking forward to Allaah's by observing the fast he weighs the profit in terms of the condition in the hereafter. However, those who measure things in materialistic terms are only concerned with the worldly aspect of fasting. As a result, they think of it as merely deprivation of the pleasures of life, which please the self and satisfy the body. They are not in the least concerned with the other aspect of its significance in the hereafter that constitutes the real reward and the genuine perpetuity. This attitude of their hearts weakens their aspiration for the hereafter and its eternal enjoyment.

Third significance

Fasting is a practical embodiment of submission and servitude to Allaah that the servant manifests by eating and drinking at night only in response to the call of his Lord. Allaah said (what means): “And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn appears to you distinct from its black thread” [Quran 2:187]. That is why the fasting Muslim should eat at Iftaar (break fast) time, at sunset, and just before dawn (Suhoor) because continuous fasting (day and night) is forbidden. The act of eating is therefore, a form of worship of Allaah When dawn starts, the Muslims discontinue eating and drinking in compliance with Allaah's order (what means): “… then complete your fast till the night appears” [Quran 2:187]. In this way, the Muslim is educated about complete servitude to Allaah in such a way that when his Lord(Allaah) commands, he complies. It is therefore not simply a matter of personal taste, whim and disposition, but a matter of obedience to Allaah and implementation of His Commands.

Fourth significance

Fasting is similarly a form of education to the whole society since when the fasting Muslim feels that people around him are all fasting, he finds fast no longer difficult but feels in harmony with the society to which he belongs through worship, the unifying factor of the whole community. Whoever compares voluntary fasting to the obligatory fast in Ramadhaan perceives a certain difficulty in the former and easiness in the latter due to the aforementioned reasons. That is why Muslims find it very difficult to spend the month of Ramadhaan away from Muslim environments.

Medical Benefits of Fasting

We all know fasting has spiritual benefits, but did you know fasting has medical benefits as well? Check out this article I came across when doing a search for Ramadan and blood sugar. Alhamdullilah I am not diabetic, but maintaining even blood sugar levels is great for your health regardless.

Check it out! Theres even a sample day's meals listed.

Medical benefits, fasting & Diabetes Mellitus

From an Articles by Shahid Athar, M.D.

Most Muslims do not fast because of medical benefits but because it has been ordained to them in the Quran. The medical benefits of fasting are as a result of fasting. Fasting in general has been used in medicine for medical reasons including weight management, for rest of the digestive tract and for lowering lipids. There are many adverse effects of total fasting as well as so-called crash diets. Islamic fasting is different from such diet plans because in Ramadan fasting, there is no malnutrition or inadequate calorie intake. The caloric intake of Muslims during Ramadan is at or slightly below the national requirement guidelines. In addition, the fasting in Ramadan is voluntarily taken and is not a prescribed imposition from the physician.

Ramadan is a month of self-regulation and self-training, with the hope that this training will last beyond the end of Ramadan. If the lessons learned during Ramadan, whether in terms of dietary intake or righteousness, are carried on after Ramadan, it is beneficial for one's entire life. Moreover, the type of food taken during Ramadan does not have any selective criteria of crash diets such as those which are protein only or fruit only type diets. Everything that is permissible is taken in moderate quantities.

The only difference between Ramadan and total fasting is the timing of the food; during Ramadan, we basically miss lunch and take an early breakfast and do not eat until dusk. Abstinence from water during this period is not bad at all and in fact, it causes concentration of all fluids within the body, producing slight dehydration. The body has its own water conservation mechanism; in fact, it has been shown that slight dehydration and water conservation, at least in plant life, improve their longevity.

The physiological effect of fasting includes lower of blood sugar, lowering of cholesterol and lowering of the systolic blood pressure. In fact, Ramadan fasting would be an ideal recommendation for treatment of mild to moderate, stable, non-insulin diabetes, obesity and essential hypertension. In 1994 the first International Congress on "Health and Ramadan", held in Casablanca, entered 50 research papers from all over the world, from Muslim and non-Muslim researchers who have done extensive studies on the medical ethics of fasting. While improvement in many medical conditions was noted; however, in no way did fasting worsen any patients' health or baseline medical condition. On the other hand, patients who are suffering from severe diseases, whether diabetes or coronary artery disease, kidney stones, etc., are exempt from fasting and should not try to fast.

There are psychological effects of fasting as well. There is a peace and tranquility for those who fast during the month of Ramadan. Personal hostility is at a minimum, and the crime rate decreases. This psychological improvement could be related to better stabilization of blood glucose during fasting as hypoglycemia after eating, aggravates behavior changes.

Recitation of the Quran not only produces a tranquility of heart and mind, but improves the memory. Therefore, I encourage my Muslim patients to fast in the month of Ramadan, but they must do it under medical supervision. Healthy adult Muslims should not fear becoming weak by fasting, but instead it should improve their health and stamina.

DIABETES MELLITUS AND RAMADAN FASTING

Diabetes mellitus affects people of all faiths. Muslims are no exception. Many diabetic Muslims have a desire to fast during the month of Ramadan, although if they cannot for health reasons, they have a valid exemption. The dilemma for physicians and Muslim scholars is whether or not Muslim diabetic patients (1) should be allowed to fast if they decide to; (2) can fast safely; (3) can be helped to fast if they decide to; (4 ) can have their disease monitored at home; and (5) are going to derive any benefit or harm to their health. Fasting during Ramadan by a Muslim diabetic patient is neither his right nor Islamic obligation, but only a privilege to be allowed by his physician, at the patient's request, knowing all the dangers and assuming full responsibility in dietary compliance and glucose monitoring, with good communication between the physician and the patient .

PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE OF DIABETES DURING RAMADAN

Diabetes mellitus itself adversely affects patients' psychological states by changes in glucose metabolism, blood and CSF osmolality, needs for discipline and compliance, fear of long term complications and threat of hypoglycemic attacks and the possibility of dehydration and coma.

On the other hand, fasting during Ramadan has a tranquilizing effect on the mind, producing inner peace and decrease in anger and hostility. Fasting Muslims realize that manifestations of anger may take away the blessings of fasting or even nullify them.

Diabetics know that stress increases the blood glucose by increasing the catecholamine level and any tool to lower the stress ; ie., biofeedback or relaxation improves diabetic control. Thus, Islamic fasting during Ramadan should have a potentially beneficial effect with regard to diabetic control.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FOR DIABETICS DURING RAMADAN

It should be directed toward (a) diabetic home management; (b) preparing them for Ramadan; (c) recognizing warning symptoms of dehydration, hypoglycemia and other possible complications.

Patients should be taught home glucose monitoring, checking urine for acetone, doing daily weights, calorie-controlled diabetic diet, need for sleep and normal exercise. They should be able to take pulse, temperature, look for skin infection and notice changes in the sensorium ( mental alertness ) . They should be on special alert for any colicky pain, a sign for renal colic, or hyperventilation, a sign of dehydration, and to be able to seek medical help quickly rather than wait for the next day.

CRITERIA ALLOWING DIABETICS TO FAST DURING RAMADAN

* a. All male diabetics over age 20. Please see editor's note (1).
* b. All female diabetics over age 20 if not pregnant or nursing. Please see editor's note (2).
* c. Body weight normal or above ideal body weight. Please see editor's note (3).
* d . Absence of infection, co-existing unstable medical conditions, ie, coronary artery disease, severe hypertension (B/P 200/120), kidney stones, COPD or emphysema. Please see editor's note (4).

Editor's Notes

(1) The age limit of 20 has no Quranic basis. The actual physical development and tolerance which can precede the physiological age is the criteria here, not the age. If a male diabetic has the physical built and ability of fasting, he should be instructed to fast if he can do it without difficulty or compromising his heatlh as explained in the rest of the article.
Back

(2) Again the age limit of 20 has no Quranic basis. See note (1). Also the ban on fasting of pregnant females or nursing mothers is not Quranic or called for. Pregnant and or nursing mothers have to assess their own tolearance and ability of fasting. Those who are healthy enough, having mild Dibetes should be able to fast.
Back

(3) Again. These are general suggestions, not Quranic rules. We should not use the scale to decide when to fast or not. A healthy slightly under weight person has no excuse not to fast, if he/she can. He/she can check with his/her physician if he/she is questioning his/her ability to fast.
Back

(4) Again. these are generalization that is not necessarily correct. Some COPD or emphysema patients, mild infections, mild coronary artery disease....etc. may be able to fast withut diffclulty or compromising their well being. If in any doubt ask your good submitter (Muslim) doctor.

ONCE BITTEN, TWICE SHY

Getting bit by my niece of nephew: cute.
Getting bit by my 20yr old sister: CRAZY!

Not to mention my finger is still throbbing, bastard girl. :D

I dont know whats wrong with her -- she gets into these, "Lets fight!" phases and shes 80lbs soakin wet holding a ton of bricks and basically a bag of bones -- her punches feel like being hit repetitively with a Slugger. Not fun. Oh and to top it ALL off -- I gotta protect myself, try and throw some punches, all the while being mindful of keeping her "safe"

HOW DO YOU HURT SOMEONE WHILE TRYING TO PROTECT THEM AT THE SAME TIME???? Its how you get bit thats how!

Other than the "fight" Ive had a pretty fun day today at home with parents. Went to the beach -- got lots of sun that turned me red.... yeah yeah it'll burn I know it.

Ramadan's eve -- funny time around the house. Everyone's outside trying to catch a glimpse of the moon in the cloudy sky. Im slowly packing everything up. Time to go back to my dungeon. *sigh*

Not sure yet if its Ramadan tomorrow, but either way here's wishing you and yours a Ramadan Kareem filled with countless blessings and benefits. Take full advantage of the Shaitan-less time. Read as much Qur'an as you can. Don't forget the poor and, if they are alive, take care of your parents, too.

Wsalaam.

Happy Thursday

I cant believe this week has flown by at top speed. Usually when I have a shortened work week the week has a tendency to drag. Im really excited about this upcoming weekend. Not only is it Labor Day weekend, the last weekend before kiddies go back to school for those who havent started already, but also this year because of Ramadan, this weekend is even more special. I get to spend the last days of Shahban with my family.

According to one website, Sha`ban is one of the meritorious months for which we find particular instructions in the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad . It is reported in authentic ahadith that Prophet Muhammad , used to fast most of the month in Sha`ban. These fasts are supererogatory (nafl) and well deserving of reward, for Sha`ban is the month immediately preceding the month of Ramadan. The Prophet mentioned in a hadith, "Rajab is the month of Allah, Sha`ban is my month and Ramadan is the month of the Nation".

1. The blessed companion Anas , reports that Prophet Muhammad , was asked, "Which fast is the most meritorious after the fasts of Ramadan?" He replied, "Fasts of Sha`ban in honor of Ramadan."

2. The blessed companion Usama ibn Zaid , reports that he asked Prophet Muhammad : "Messenger of Allah, I have seen you fasting in the month of Sha`ban so frequently that I have never seen you fasting in any other month." Prophet Muhammad , replied: "That (Sha`ban) is a month between Rajab and Ramadan which is neglected by many people. And it is a month in which an account of the deeds (of human beings) is presented before the Lord of the universe, so, I wish that my deeds be presented at a time when I am in a state of fasting."

3. Ummul Mu'mineen `Aishah (r), says, "Prophet Muhammad , used to fast the whole of Sha`ban. I said to him, 'Messenger of Allah, is Sha`ban your favorite month for fasting?' He said, 'In this month Allah prescribes the list of the persons dying this year. Therefore, I like that my death comes when I am in a state of fasting.’"

4. In another Tradition she says, "Prophet Muhammad , would sometimes begin to fast continuously until we thought he would not stop fasting, and sometimes he used to stop fasting until we thought he would never fast. I never saw the Messenger of Allah fasting a complete month, except the month of Ramadan, and I have never seen him fasting in a month more frequently than he did in Sha`ban."

5. In another report she says, "I never saw the Messenger of Allah, , fasting in a month so profusely as he did in the month of Sha`ban. He used to fast in that month leaving only a few days, rather, he used to fast almost the whole of the month."

6. Ummul-Mu'mineen Umm Salamah (r), says: "I have never seen the Messenger of Allah fasting for two months continuously except in the months of Sha`ban and Ramadan."

These reports indicate that fasting in the month of Sha`ban, though not obligatory, is so meritorious that Prophet Muhammad did not like to miss it.

BEST TIME TO MAKE DUA

Taken from: http://www.islamawareness.net/Dua/best.html

1. The Last Third Of The Night
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said: 'In the last third of every night our Rabb (Cherisher and Sustainer) (Allah (SWT)) descends to the lowermost heaven and says; "Who is calling Me, so that I may answer him? Who is asking Me so that may I grant him? Who is seeking forgiveness from Me so that I may forgive him?."' [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith Qudsi]

Amr ibn Absah narrated that the Prophet said: 'The closest any worshipper can be to His Lord is during the last part of the night, so if you can be amongst those who remember Allah at that time, then do so.'[at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i, al-Hakim - Sahih]

2. Late at night
When people are sleeping and busy with worldly pleasures Allah (SWT) gives the believers an opportunity, or an answer hour if they can fight sleep and invoke Allah (SWT) for whatever they need. The Prophet (SAW) said: 'There is at night an hour, no Muslim happens to be asking Allah any matter of this world or the Hereafter, except that he will be given it, and this (occurs) every night.'
[Muslim #757]

3. Between Adhan and Iqamah
Anas (RA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said: 'A supplication made between the Adhan and Iqama is not rejected.'
[Ahmad, abu Dawud #521, at-Tirmidhi #212, Sahih al-Jami #3408, an-Nasai and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (sound)]

4. An Hour On Friday
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA): Allah’s Messenger (SAW) talked about Friday and said: 'There is an hour on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while offering Salat (prayer) and asks something from Allah (SWT), then Allah (SWT) will definitely meet his demand.' And he (the Prophet (SAW) pointed out the shortness of that particular time with his hands.[Sahih al-Bukhari]

Some have said that this hour is from the time the Imam (prayer’s leader) enters the mosque on Friday’s prayer until the prayer is over (ie between the two khutbahs), whereas others have said that it is the last hour of the day (ie after the Asr prayer until the Maghrib prayer).

5. While Drinking Zamzam Water
Jaber (RA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said: 'Zamzam water is for what it is drunk for.' [Ahmad 3: 357 and Ibn Majah #3062]. This means that when you drink Zamzam water you may ask Allah (SWT) for anything you like to gain or benefit from this water such as healing from illness.... etc.

6. While Prostrating
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (SAW), said: 'The nearest a slave can be to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so invoke (supplicate) Allah (SWT) much in it. [Muslim, abu Dawud, an-Nasa'i and others, Sahih al-Jami #1175]

When a Muslim is in his Salat (prayer) he is facing Allah (SWT) and when he prostrates he is the nearest he can be to Allah (SWT) so it is best to invoke Allah (SWT) at this time. It is said that while in prostration, one should not ask for worldy needs (ie a nice car, a new job, etc), but for the Hereafter.

7. When Waking Up at Night
Narrated Ubada Bin As-Samit that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said: 'Whomever wakes up at night and says La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la shrika lahu lahulmulku, wa lahul hamdu, wa huwa ala kulli shai'in qadir. Alhamdu lillahi, wa subhanallahi wa la ilaha illallahu, wallah akbir, wa la hawla wala quwata illa billah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah (SWT) He is the only one who has no partners. His is the kingdom and all the praises are for Allah (SWT) All the glories are for Allah (SWT) And none has the right to be worshipped but Allah (SWT) and Allah (SWT) is the most Great and there is neither might nor power except with Allah (SWT) and then says, Allahumma ighfir li (O Allah! Forgive me) or invokes Allah (SWT), he will be responded to and if he makes ablution and performs Salat (prayer), his Salat (prayer) will be accepted. [Sahih al-Bukhari]

8. At The End Of The Obligatory Salat:
Narrated Abu Omamah (RA): that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) was asked, O Messenger of Allah, which supplication is heard (by Allah (SWT), he said the end of the night and at the end of the obligatory Salat (prayer) [at-Tirmidhi]. This time is after saying 'At-tahyat' , and before making Tasleem (finishing prayer)

9. The Night Of 'Qadr' (Decree)
This night is the greatest night of the year. This is the night which the almighty Allah (SWT) said about it, "The night of Al-Qadar (Decree) is better than a thousand months." [Surah al-Qadr, 97: 3]

The Night of Decree is one of the odd nights of the last ten nights of the blessed month of Ramadan. The angels descend down to the earth, and the earth is overwhelmed with peace and serenity until the break of dawn and when he doors of Paradise are opened, the worshipper is encouraged to turn to Allah to ask for his needs for this world and the Hereafter.

10. During The Rain
Narrated Sahel Ibn Sa'ad (RA): that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: 'Two will not be rejected, Supplication when the Adhan (call of prayer) is being called, and at the time of the rain'. [Al-Hakim 2: 114, and Abu Dawud #2540, ibn Majah]

'Seek the response to your du'as when the armies meet, and the prayer is called, and when rain falls' [reported by Imam al-Shafi' in al-Umm, al-Sahihah #1469]. The time of the rain is a time of mercy from Allah (SWT) so, one should take advantage of this time when Allah (SWT) is having mercy on His slaves.

11. At the Adhan
'Seek the response to your du'as when the armies meet, and the prayer is called, and when rain falls' [reported by Imam al-Shafi' in al-Umm, al-Sahihah #1469]

In another hadith; 'When the prayer is called, the doors of the skies are opened, and the du'a is answered' [al-Tayalisi in his Musnad #2106, al-Sahihah #1413]

12. The One Who Is Suffering Injustice and Opression
The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said to Mua'ad Ibn Jabal (RA), 'Beware of the supplication of the unjustly treated, because there is no shelter or veil between it (the supplication of the one who is suffering injustice) and Allah (SWT)' [Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The prophet (SAW) declared, 'Three men whose dua is never rejected (by Allah) are: the fasting person until he breaks his fast (in another narration, when he breaks fast), the just ruler and the one who is oppressed.'[Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi - Hasan]

In another hadith; The Prophet (SAW) declared: 'Three du'as are surely answered: The du'a of the oppressed, the du'a of the traveler, and the du'a of the father/mother (upon their child)'. The One who is suffering injustice is heard by Allah (SWT) when he invokes Allah (SWT) to retain his rights from the unjust one or oppressor. Allah (SWT) has sworn to help the one who is suffering from injustice sooner or later as the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said.

13. The Traveler
The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said; Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. [al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi - Sahih]

During travel supplication is heard by Allah (SWT) if the trip is for a good reason, but if the trip is for a bad intention or to perform illegal things (making sins) this will not apply to it.

14. The Parent's Supplication for their Child

15. Dua after praising Allah and giving salat on the Prophet (SAW) in the tashahhud at the end of salat.
Narrated Faddalah ibn Ubayd (RA): that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: 'When anyone of you makes du'a, let him start by glorifying his Lord and praising Him, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet (SAW), then let him pray for whatever he wants'
[abu Dawud #1481, at-Tirmidhi #3477]

In another hadith; Baqiy ibn Mukhallid (RA) narrated that that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: 'Every du'a is not responded to until one sends blessings upon the Prophet (SAW)' [al-Bayhaqi]

In another hadith; Umar (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said: 'Du'a is detained between the heavens and the earth and no part of it is taken up until you send blessings upon your Prophet (SAW)' [at-Tirmidhi #486]

After a person has finished his tashahhud and before saying the 'salam', supplication at this time is one likely to be responded to.
Ibn Mas'ud narrates: I was once praying, and the Prophet (SAW), Abu Bakr and Umar (were all present). When I sat down (in the final tashahhud), I praised Allah, then sent salams on the Prophet, then started praying for myself. At this, the Prophet (SAW) said:
'Ask, and you shall be given it! Ask, and you shall be given it!' [at-Tirmidhi #593 - hasan, Mishkat al-Misbah #931]

16. The dua of a Muslim for his absent brother or sister Muslim stemming from the heart.
The prophet (SAW) said: 'There is no believing servant who supplicates for his brother in his absence where the angels do not say, 'the same be for you'' [Muslim]

17. Dua on the Day of Arafat
The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: 'The best supplication is the supplication on the day of Arafat'. [at-Tirmidhi and Malik]

The day of Arafat is the essence and pinnacle of Hajj. On this great and momentous day, millions of worshippers gather together on one plain, from every corner of the world, with only one purpose in mind - to respone to the call of their Creator. During this auspicious day, Allah does not refuse the requests of His worshippers.

18. Dua during the month of Ramadan

Ramadan is month full of many blessings, thus the du'a of Ramadan is a blessed one. This can be inferred from the Prophet (SAW) saying: 'When Ramadan comes, the Doors of Mercy (another narration says Paradise) are opened, and the doors of Hell are closed, and the Shaitans are locked up' Thus, it is clear that du'a during Ramadan has a greater chance of being accepted, as the Gates of Paradise and Mercy are opened. [Sahih al-Bukhari #1899, Muslim #1079 and others]

19. Dua when the Armies meet
When the Muslim is facing the enemy in battle, at this critical period, the du'a of a worshipper is accepted.

Sahl ibn Sa'd (RA) narrtaed the the Prophet (SAW) said: 'Two duas are never rejected, or rarely rejected: the du'a during the call for prayer, and the du'a during the clamity when the two armies attack each other' [Abu Dawud #2540, ibn Majah, al-Hakim]

20. When Muslims gather for the purpose of invoking and remembering Allah (Dhikrullah).

The Prophet (SAW) said: If a group of people sit together remembering Allah, the angels will circle them, mercy will shroud them, peace will descend onto them and Allah will remember them among those with Him. [Muslim]

In a long hadith, Umm Salamah (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said, when Abu Salamah had just passed away, and had closed his eyes, 'Do not ask for yourselves anything but good, for the angels will say 'Ameen' to all that you ask for. O Allah, forgive Abu Salamah, and raise his ranks among those who are guided.' [Muslim, abu Dawud, Ahmad]

26. Dua of the one fasting until he breaks his fast.

27. Dua of the one fasting at the time of breaking fast

The prophet (SAW) declared, 'Three men whose dua is never rejected (by Allah) are: when a fasting person breaks fast (in another narration, the fasting person until he breaks his fast), the just ruler and the one who is oppressed.'[Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi - Hasan]

And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger', except that the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he can enter into it through whichever one he pleases' [Muslim #234, abu Dawud #162, Ahmad, an-Nasa'i] Saying what has been mentioned in the hadith that is directly related to it (ablution)

32. Dua after stoning the Jamarat at Hajj

The stoning of the small Shaitan (jamrat sugra), or the middle Shaitan (jamrat wusta) pillars during Hajj. It is narrated that the Prophet (SAW) would stone the small Jamarah (one of the three pillars that is stoned in the last days of Hajj), then face the qiblah, raise his hands, and make du'a for a long time. He would then stone the middle Jamarah and do the same. When he stoned the large Jamarah, he would depart without making any du'a. [Sahih al-Bukhari #1753 and others]

33. At the Crowing of a Rooster

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said: 'When you hear a rooster crowing, then ask Allah for His bounties, for it has seen an angel, and when you hear a donkey braying, then seek refuge in Allah from Shaitan, for it has seen a Shaitan' [Sahih al-Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmad, Sahih al-Jami #611]

34. Du'a made inside the Ka'bah
The Ka'bah is a sanctuary that has no comparison in the entire world. The du'a of one who prays inside the hijr is considered as being made inside the ka'bah, as it is part of the house (Baitullah). [This is the semicircle to the right of the Ka'bah if you face the door, opposite to the Yemeni corner and the Black stone wall.]

When the servant says: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe, Allah the Most High says: My servant has praised Me. And when he (the servant) says: The Most Compassionate, the Merciful, Allah the Most High says: My servant has lauded Me. When he (the servant) says: Master of the Day of Judgment, He remarks: My servant has glorified Me, and sometimes He will say: My servant entrusted (his affairs) to Me. When he (the worshipper) says: Thee do we worship and of Thee do we ask help, He (Allah) says: This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Then, when he (the worshipper) says: Guide us to the straight path, the path of those to whom Thou hast been Gracious -- not of those who have incurred Thy displeasure, nor of those who have gone astray, He (Allah) says: This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. [Muslim 4: 395]
