Sicko

Friday night my friends and I went to see the movie Sicko. Michael Moore I think is brilliant in making documentaries. He depicts the healthcare industry as this conglomerate tyrant that steals from the poor and sick to make money for the rich. Correction: to make MORE money for the rich.

Its disgusting to think that third world countries have it better than US, are happier than US, live longer than US, and we are the ones with all the brains and power. All for what?

Healthcare in this country is in need of major reform. I agree with everything that Michael Moore put forth in his movie, but there's always more to it that meets the eye.

I agree he's shedding light on the situation and in doing so trying to make it entertaining as well --- otherwise who would watch it? But, he leaves some stuff out. Some things are fudged a bit. But thats ok its all in the sake of recognition. Atleast now we are recognizing that a problem indeed exists.

First things first of what he left out: Where do you think all that money comes from the countries with socialized medicine? Taxpayers. US citizens lose patience, hair and sleep over paying for what we pay for now in terms of taxes, theyre drowning in taxes overseas.

Second is the issue of malpractice. Here in the US everything is someone's fault. EVERYTHING. Good smaritans who come upon an accident can be sued for helping out if something goes wrong... GOOOD SAMARITANS!!! There everybody helps out. No one complains, much. There is no malpractice. IF there was then physicians would have to pay money to protect themselves and therefore need to jack up their charges.

Third, all those countries are sooooo super small with less population than we have. We have a lot of illegal immigrants living here who are using our resources and not paying taxes. Its hard for us to establish a system that rivals the other countries. It just wouldnt work here.

I liked watching the movie. It brought to light a terrible terrible situation. Yes, we need healthcare reform. Yes, Id love to move to Canada. HAHAHA.

Well, I think everyone already knows that the health care in this country sucks. I'm curious to watch the movie myself, and probably will, but I'd like to see some real proposals put forward for revamping the system. Just exposing the problems isn't enough. Look at Iraq. Given what the public now knows, why are we there again?

You're right. Exposing the problem isnt the only solution, but now that we know there IS a problem we can force someone to do something about it.

The funniest thing to me is that we're a nation built on democratic principles and ideals, a govt of the people if you will yet our people do not step up and vote, dont voice concerns, dont protest enough.

Other nations may seem to be more communist, socialist, monarchy, or radical yet the people care so much that they scream and holler still to get noticed. That is how change is brought about.

American citizens just dont care.

To an extent. But it's no surprise that a lot of educated people choose not to vote, because they "know" their vote is worthless (quoting "know" because you can debate how true that is)

Do you really want to move to Canada? I vaguely remember you have a "chance" and being adverse to it. ;)

Salam Farah,

Reins of the health care industry is in the hands of corporate executives and/ or rich professionals. They all control our congress and senate through their footprints of heavy fund raising. Revamping or overhauling the health care system is not an easy task. Look it what happened to Hilary Clinton who tried to propose the change to the health care system!!!…Not impossible but I think the change needs to be initiated at the legislative level. Of course, if they all up in Washington DC are true and sincere to their respective fiduciary duties.

I'm Canadian. I paid $0.00 in income tax this year. I am self-employed and I reinvested a lot into my buisness this year, so that was all deductible right down to zero. How's that for "drowning in taxes"? We aren't.

A lot of Americans feel like tax rates are high in other countries, because in part they have no idea what a personal budget and savings plan looks like when medical bills do not exist. In some places, that also extends to student loans, which also do not exist. Your real income, even if you pay higher taxes, looks very different when these huge expense categories are entirely removed from existence.

Oh, but you wouldn't want to drown. That has to be bad!

"Drowning in taxes..." yuck - I'd better shovel off a quarter of my income to make the stockholders of my insurance company rich. That's much better! People in other countries fail to appreciate how freeing it is to file for bankrupcy for medical reasons.
